The Lost Coin

Luke 15:8-10
The Lost Coin

“What woman, if she has ten silver coins and loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin which I had lost!’ In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

Are you earnestly looking for the lost coin? Jesus defines the coin as a sinner and that finding that lost coin is to see a sinner turn to repentance. Heaven puts great value on that coin saying that the angels rejoice over each one that is found. This is a convicting word for us as Christians. If all of heaven has put such a great value on that lost coin should we not be in complete unity with this desire. Should we not be pursuing the lost with the great desire to rejoice with all of heaven’s hosts over each one? Our hearts should be burning within us to be searching for them and yet we have to ask ourselves if we have even noticed that we were missing a coin. All of heaven is watching for that one sinner who turns to repentance, should we be doing less? To any Christian these should be stirring words that cause us to look into the practical application of doing this.
The woman began by lighting a lamp and then swept the house carefully until she found it. How do we apply this? First let me say that if she was not focused on finding the coin she may never have found it, for if she was daydreaming or wishing she was somewhere else or to preoccupied with other chores, that coin would have either taken forever to find or perhaps never been found. But that coin meant the world to her and she searched earnestly until it was found. So also with us, if we do not pursue that coin with our whole heart and just casually search the floor without really paying close attention we will also not find it. We cannot pursue the coin casually just hoping to possibly come across it while we do other things. Jesus’ example of being a fisher of men is a good description. A fisherman would not go out fishing and hope his net might fall overboard and possibly while it was down there, catch some fish. It takes a determination and physical labor to cast those nets and bring them in otherwise you will catch nothing.
Let us look at the other point which is that she first lit her lamp before searching. These are not ordinary coins but sinners in need of repentance that they might turn their hearts back to God. The light is Jesus, and His words expose our sinfulness and bring us to repentance. Many times in the Old Testament a priest finds the laws of God that have been left neglected and buried for many years and brings them out and reads them to the people and exposes how far from God that they have strayed; whereupon there is much heart distress over what they have done and they make a recommitment to obedience to God. God’s light is powerful and always brings conviction of sin. It is only under His light that the lost coin will be found.
So I just want to leave us with these convicting words. What is the net that you personally are casting, and where are you casting it? Each of us needs to ask ourselves these questions every morning so that when Jesus returns He will have found us faithful stewards of His talents. God bless each of you today and May He bless each of us with much fruit for our labors.

  1. Wonderful words of encouragement!!
I just love the WORD of GOD. Isaiah the prophet says "Our GOD reigns" How true this is!! It is beautiful to know that GOD loves us even though we turned our backs on HIM. Just like the woman rejoiced when she found her coin; in the same way it is that GOD rejoices when one sinner accepts HIS plan of salvation- through HIS son JESUS.
I have walked away so many times from HIS assignment b/cause of excuses. I am very grateful to GOD for sending JESUS to show me the way back to HIM. I feel special to know that though I was a "lost coin" The LORD using people around me sent HIS WORD. I heard and made a commitment to the LORD. And so now that I have an open relationship with GOD I am made accountable to others; to help those who need encouragement; those who need to hear the WORD; those who need to hear about this invitation to salvation. I realize that it is only through my diligence and determination that I will help others learn about salvation in CHRIST JESUS.
It doesn't matter how broken down or tired we are in sin, CHRIST is looking for us b/cause we are that special, just like the coin.
Very encouraging Seth!! Every time that I read through one of your lessons I am confident that I have stepped one rung higher into my relationship with GOD.
My prayers for those who read, that they will accept the plan of salvation through JESUS. For those who know him; and are saved through CHRIST ; that they will go out in diligence and determination to help the lost learn of salvation. Christmas time would be such an ideal time. JESUS came to us for this reason. Thanks again Seth. GOD's richest blessings.

  2. Hi Seth. I love your message. Before you explained Jesus' words, His quote, I asked myself, "Am I the coin, or am I the person looking for it.". I know I am a sinner. But I am not lost, like the coin. I have been found. \o/ <me praising God. And when I go out looking for people to read your message about Jesus on my tablet, I feel like the woman looking for the coin. I also feel like I am fishing. I love this fishing! I never realy did the other kind. And, when I do get someone to read what you write about Jesus, YES, my soul does rejoice! Could the angels also be rejoicing? CLAUDETTE CT

    1. That's what the BIBLE says, Claudette. Read St. Luke 15:1-10 Verse 10 (JESUS speaks) "Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of GOD over one sinner that repenteth". GOD loves when you go and "fish" for others. It was very nice how you helped me to get my account straightened out so I can better communicate with you all.
      GOD's Blessing.

  6. to much that is given, much is required.. how much jesus has given us his very life...how little we use all the talents he has given to us, not for ourselves but to bless others and glorify the kingdom, how short we all fail, yet jesus carries us like that one lost sheep that he has found and he carries allthe way home telling it how precious it is and how much he loves it.

  7. The lost coin is like the lost sheep that jesus goes and looks for and when he finds it he rejoices, carrying it home telling that shepp how much he loves it, how precious it is and how special that sheep is to him, so much he would lay his life down for that lost sheep.how much more should we do for jesus and the ones who don't know him. sandy loves godct.

  8. That really tells me that The Word of God is in everyones heart but we dont realize that we forget and the times of trouble we fogret but as soon as were in trouble we think of God. For example, if we get arrested we think of God. "Oh, my God, help me". Kevin CT

  12. I believe that this was ment for me to hear. God has His ways to letting people know that he is always here for us. No mattere how far we may stray away for him, when that light turns on He will find us. i always wondered what it means to be a lost coin, and now I know. I'm a lost coin, but I know that God will turn on his light, and I will be found. Thank you for whoever wrote this, becausen you just gave me a little more faith. Great way to break down the lost coin, and the lamp of light. Lamont CT

  17. GOD's Love, Amazing!! Wonderful!! HE loves us so much HE sent HIS only son into the world to "save us"....redeem us from sin, that awful separation from GOD. To think about this When we share the excitement with others, about GOD's unconditional Love for us we also exercise the responsibility to lead one to the Throne of GOD. Back into the arms of GOD.

See the words of a popular song.
"Each one can reach one; As we follow after Christ we all can lead one; We can lead one to the Savior; then together we can tell the world that Jesus is the way- If we each one reach one.

    GOD's Blessings,
    Sophia.

  18. She was very determined to find the last coin. Andd the secondd paragraph says the lost coin is a lost soul. I am not a lost coin. My Lord finds me whenever He needs me. Sometimes I find him. Frank ct

  20. I wonder why you would think this lesson is / was good only for the young? Seth's message is based on what Jesus said and I don't recall Jesus ever aiming His preaching to the young. He talked of little children, but I don't recall Jesus preaching to them in the bible. Or, is it something Seth said?
